Ο Παναγιωτης Αλεξόπουλος γεννήθηκε και μεγάλωσε στην Πάτρα. Μετά την αποφοίτησή του από το Πειραματικό Σχολείο του Πανεπιστημίου Πατρών παρακολούθησε μαθήματα Βιολογίας στο Πανεπιστήμιο Πατρών, όπου και εν συνεχεία σπούδασε Ιατρική. Ειδικεύθηκε στη Ψυχιατρική και Ψυχοθεραπεία στα πανεπιστημιακά νοσοκομεία του Rostock και του Erlangen στη Γερμανία, καθώς και στο νοσοκομείο Klinikum rechts der Isar του Πολυτεχνείου του Μονάχου, στο οποίο και εργάστηκε ως αρχίατρος και διευθυντής του νευροβιολογικού εργαστηρίου της Ψυχιατρικής και Ψυχοθεραπευτικής Κλινικής. Είναι διδάκτωρ και υφηγητής του Πολυτεχνείου του Μονάχου, ενώ από τον Απρίλιο του 2015 συνεχίζει τη μάχιμη κλινική, διδακτική και ερευνητική δραστηριότητα του στη Ψυχιατρική Κλινική του Πανεπιστημίου Πατρών. Ο κ. Αλεξόπουλος είναι σήμερα επιστημονικά υπεύθυνος του Ειδικού Ιατρείου Ψυχογηριατρικής και πρώιμης Διάγνωσης Νευρονοητικών Διαταραχών του Πανεπιστημιακού Γενικού Νοσοκομείου Πατρών (ΠΓΝΠ) ενώ συντονίζει την Ολοκληρωμένη Παρέμβαση Ψυχογηριατρικής Υποστήριξης (ΟΠΣΥ) στην Περιφερεια Δυτικής Ελλάδας καθώς και το πρόγραμμα διασύνδεσης του Κέντρου Ημέρας για άτομα με Άνοια στην Πάτρα. Στα πλαίσια εκπαιδευτικής άδειας υπηρετεί κατά το ακαδημαϊκό έτος 2022-23 ως επισκέπτης καθηγητής στο Global Brain Health Institute / Trinity College Dublin, στο Δουβλίνο. Η ερευνητική δραστηριότητα του αφορά την πρώιμη διάγνωση και τους δείκτες της Νόσου Alzheimer και της νευροεκφύλισης με σωμάτια Lewy, τη γηριατρική κατάθλιψη αλλά και θέματα που άπτονται της φιλοσοφίας της ψυχικής υγείας, ένα πεδίο στο οποίο κατέχει μεταπτυχιακό δίπλωμα ειδίκευσης από το University of Central Lancashire του Ηνωμένου Βασιλείου. Είναι συγγραφέας πάνω από 100 δημοσιεύσεων σε επιστημονικά περιοδικά εγνωσμένου κύρους. Είναι παντρεμένος με την πολιτικό μηχανικό Έλενα Μπεκρή και έχουν αποκτήσει δυο κόρες την Αιμιλία και την Κωνσταντίνα. Αρθρογραφεί στις εφημερίδες των Πατρών “Πελοπόννησος” και “Γνώμη”, στην εφημερίδα “Εστία” των Αθηνών, στο περιοδικό ελευθερίας και γλώσσας “Νέα Ευθύνη” καθώς και στους ιστοτόπους www.pelop.gr, www.newsplus.gr και www.thebest.gr.
Panos Alexopoulos was born in Patras, Greece. After graduating from the Experimental School of the University of Patras he attended lectures at the Faculty of Biology of the University of Patras and then studied medicine at the same university. He has worked as psychiatric resident at the German university hospitals of Rostock and Erlangen, as well as at the hospital of the Technical University of Munich (TUM). He obtained his PhD and completed his «Habilitation» (German postdoctoral degree program) at the TUM. In February 2013 he was appointed director of the neurobiological laboratory of the Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy of TUM, at which he has also worked as consultant psychiatrist. Since April 2015 he practices medicine as psychiatrist and psychotherapist at the University Hospital of Patras, while he serves as adjunct Professor at TUM. Dr. Alexopoulos currently runs the university old age psychiatry outpatient clinic in Patras and coordinates the network of INTegRated InterveNtion of pSychogerIatric Care (INTRINSIC) services in the Region of Western Greece, as well as the conciliar and liaison services of the Patras dementia day care centre. In the academic year 2022-23, he serves as visiting professor at the Global Brain Health Institute / Trinity College Dublin in Ireland within the frames of a sabbatical leave. His research focus encompasses early diagnosis and markers of Alzheimer’s disease and neurodegeneration with Lewy-bodies, geriatric depression, as well as issues of philosophy and mental health, a field in which he has obtained a MA degree from the University of Central Lancashire in Preston, United Kingdom. He is the author and co-author of more than 100 publications in peer review journals. He is married to the civil engineer Elena Bekri and they have two daughters Aimilia and Konstantina.
