id=\"en\">Traveling to universities of Iraqi Kurdistan: Developing competences in digital learning <\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p> Traveling to universities in Kurdistan, in northern Iraq, was very interesting for the members of the European universities that were invited to conduct seminars about digital learning in April 2019. In the framework of the OPATEL project, representatives of the University of Patras, Greece, and ISAPB (Instituto Superior de Superior Brand\u00e3o) from Portugal, met colleagues from 6 Iraqi and Iranian universities in the cities of Erbil and Duhok in Kurdistan. During the 4<sup>th<\/sup> OPATEL seminar the participants shared experiences and exchanged views about the past, the present and the future of e-learning. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The training sessions\nwere held at Salahaddin University in Erbil, the mother university of Iraqi\nKurdistan, and at two institutions in the city of Duhok, the University of\nDuhok and the Duhok Polytechnic University. The city of Erbil, which is the\ncapital of the Iraqi Kurdistan Autonomous Region, known in ancient history as\nArbela, is famous for the Battle of Gaugamela between Alexander the Great and\nDarius III of Persia in 331 BC. Erbil, with its impressive citadel, is one of\nthe oldest continuously inhabited areas in the world. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Duhok, a beautiful city in northern Kurdistan, is encircled by mountains along the Tigris river. Duhok, which is located about 45 Km north of Mosul and about 70 Km south of the borders with Turkey, has received many refugees, mainly from Syria. The region is fully controlled by the Kurdistan Regional Government and is an oasis of security in this difficult area of \u200b\u200bMesopotamia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Iraqi Kurdistan universities, through their participation in the OPATEL project, have absorbed the experiences transferred and have made excellent progress in developing digital learning services. But what it\u2019s worth mentioning is the patriotism and sense of hospitality of the Kurds. &#8220;You are our friends and now you have a family in Kurdistan,&#8221; were the touching words of our Kurdish colleagues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The OPATEL project is funded by the EU Erasmus+ program, with coordinator the Leipzig University of Applied Sciences. The University of Patras (UPAT) research team is coordinated by Dr Nikos Karacapilidis, Professor at the Department of Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering. UPAT was represented in the seminar at Iraqi Kurdistan by Dr Victoria Daskalou, who gave the presentation entitled \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/presentation\/d\/1Gi_tgzpOiwYABhPgl8pXJM4hVWUXsohjwSTMbN4QPnM\/edit?usp=sharing\">Sharing experiences of blended learning in higher education<\/a>\u201d and by Dr Ioannis Gialelis who presented experiences of e-learning by the Engineering School. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the visit at\nKurdistan, the UPAT team met and discussed with Mr Efthymios Costopoulos, the first\nConsul General of Greece in Erbil. Mr Costopoulos, in addition to his role at\nthe political level, works systematically for the peaceful coexistence of\nethnicities in Kurdistan and for the religious and cultural pluralism of the\nregion.
